China Unicom (CHU.NYSE) to build 20,000 WiFi APs in Tianjin this year
TIANJIN, Mar. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tianjin Unicom, a local branch of China Unicom (CHU.NYSE; 00762.HK; 600050.SH) will build 20,000 WiFi access points (AP) in the public areas of North China's Tianjin municipality by the end of this year.
The company has signed a contract with the Tianjin government to undertake the i-Tianjin WiFi AP project, which is launched to provide free WiFi access service for local residents.
The first batch of the free WiFi APs will become operational at the end of this March. By the end of this year, Tianjin Unicom will complete the construction of 20,000 WiFi APs, including 1,000 APs in scenery spots, 7,000 in hospitals, 2,000 in hotels, 4,000 in commercial complexes, 3,000 in traffic hubs, and another 3,000 in government departments.
By 2017, Tianjin will build 200,000 WiFi APs, and its WiFi network will cover all the city's important public areas. (Edited by Li Xiaoyu, Lixy@xinhua.org)
